Our coordinate measuring capabilities help us fulfil our ongoing commitment to quality, precision fabrication, and better product design.

What is a coordinate measuring machine?

A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is used to measure the geometric characteristics of an object. The portable CMM we use at Edmo uses an articulated arm to enable total freedom of movement around a 3D item.

CMMs are used to carry out high-precision 3D measurements, imaging, and comparisons of parts and compound structures during production and quality assurance processes. Our CMM can be interfaced with a range of software to further its application.

Benefits

Coordinate measuring technology plays an important role in many of the processes we carry out at Edmo. It improves and diversifies the design and prototyping services we offer, and advances the combined skills of our expert team.

Precision manufacturing

Our CMM can take precision measurements (better than 1 µm), enabling us to accurately manufacture complex componentry, and achieve levels of repeatability from 0.024mm (0.0009 in.) to 0.064mm (0.0025in.)

Time saving

Coordinate measuring technology can take up to 30,000 optical measurements per second, and the overall process takes no more than 30 minutes. The data gathered is compared to CAD drawings using software, again speeding up the entire process.

Cost-saving

Our coordinate measuring machine is fast, accurate, portable, and in-house. This allows us to make considerable cost savings across a number of areas, including labour, trouble-shooting, and transportation.

Measure large and complex items

Our portable CMM enables us to gather precision data on items up to 3.7m / 12ft spherical working volume. Likewise, it can be used to measure inside spaces that would be difficult to accurately gauge manually.

First Article Inspections

We can supply first article inspection reports for projects, vital for ongoing accuracy and clarity. Our CMM checks a series of measurements against given parameters, and identifies areas that are out of tolerance.

Superior quality control

Coordinate measuring technology means we can carry out 3D inspections, CAD comparison, reverse engineering and precise dimensional analyses, offering our customers consistently superior levels of precision manufacturing.

In-house CMM

Many of our competitors don’t have in-house coordinate measuring capabilities, forcing customers to source another supplier, wait while materials are sent elsewhere, or settle for less accuracy in the design and manufacture of their products.

Design support

Coordinate measuring can play an important role in the design and prototyping stages of a project, creating a precision image of your item in virtual space, which can then be tested, adjusted and perfected with no waste.
