Mandrel Bends

Mandrel Bends

mandrel bend example Mandrel bending is one of types of aluminium bending performed by our in-house bending team at Edmo. Our aluminium extrusion bending machines are just some of the numerous computer numerical control (CNC) machining centres we have at our fabrication facility. We have the technical expertise to advise you on the most appropriate form of extrusion – whether that is mandrel bending or another process.

Mandrel bending – what is it?

A mandrel is a long tool which is often placed inside the aluminium tube. The tube is then pressed against the mandrel to create the bend required, often using a mandrel tube bending machine.

When would mandel bending be used?

Mandrel bending is used to create a clean, sharp bend – preventing the tube from malforming in the process of the bend. The mandel is held in a fixed position with the tube pulled over it. Mandrel bending is often used inserting very tight bends into aluminium tubes.

Typical uses for mandrel bends

Mandrel bending is often used to make products such as:

  • Chair legs
  • Tubing in automotive engines
  • Handles on machinery
  • Tubing in the aviation industry
